| Blood and Opim (other potentially infectious materials) Spill Handling Procedures
SCOPE
This procedure for handling of blood and OPIM spills is for the general housekeeping area
of a health care facility. Blood and OPIM spills should be dealt with immediately. The
operator should assume that the material is infectious with HIV, HBV or other bloodborne
pathogens.
CLEAN-UP PROCEDURE
1. Start by putting on gloves (single use or reusable).
2. BLOOD SPILLS OR OPIM REMOVAL. For a small spill (less than 100 mls.), blot
up with paper or turkish toweling, or any of the various powders (plaster of paris) on the
market, is appropriate. Place all materials in a biohazard bag for disposal. Dispose of
biohazard bag according to local regulations.
For a large spill (larger than 100 mls.), add appropriate TB effective disinfectant to
spill
and allow sufficient contact time before absorption process as stated above. Place all
materials in a biohazard bag for disposal. Dispose of biohazard bag according to local
regulations.
3. DISINFECTING AFTER REMOVAL. For a small spill (less than 100 mls.), spray
area of the spill with TB effective disinfectant spray such as Asepticare Virucide Spray
and
allow 10 minutes of contact time. Allow surface to air dry.
For a large spill, mop area of spill with appropriate TB effective disinfectant such as
Quik
Fill 960, allow 10 minutes of contact time, remove any remaining mixture with mop and
bucket, and discard mixture. Allow surface to air dry. Launder mop heads using hot
wash/dry cycles.
4. SINGLE USE GLOVES:
If single use gloves are used with this procedure, at this point remove the gloves and
place
them in the biohazard bag and seal the biohazard bag. Wash your hands immediately using
EpiCare Antimicrobial hand soap. If a wash station is not immediately available, sanitize
your hands with Epicare antimicrobial Topical Gel. Follow this, as soon as possible, with
a hand washing procedure using the EpiCare hand soap listed above.
5. REUSABLE GLOVES:
Wash the gloves while they are on, using the EpiCare hand soap listed in Step 4. If the
gloves were visibly contaminated with blood or OPIM, dip in a use-solution of the
germicide as specified in Step 3 above before removal. Wash hands as specified above.
6. Follow up with normal cleaning procedure (mop and bucket, autoscrubber, etc.) using
daily cleaning/disinfection solution of Quik Fill 920
